In the last 48hrs Facebook has launched ‘Facebook Places’.

 

I have done some quick research on what has been said, there are mixed reviews but largely due to the privacy issues & Facebooks’s aggressive approach of always making these features ‘active by default’. However there is no doubt that this could become a massive game changer if even a ¼ of the 500 million Facebook users begin to utilize it.

Flipboard launches on the iPad

As of Today, Flipboard is now available in the iPad app store. This start-up calls itself the "world's first social magazine". It basically connects to your social media accounts (mainly Facebook and Twitter), and takes content posted by your network, as well as popular news sources (which you choose) - and displays this content in a layout format similar to a magazine. In this video, you can get an idea of what this unique browsing experience is like.

Facebook: More Important than Google?

According to Compete Inc, web measurements show that Facebook has surpassed Google to become the major source of directing web traffic.  And just yesterday, numbers released by Nielsen revealed Facebook to be the online destination where people spend most of their time. That in itself is not as surprising as the amount of time people spend on Facebook compared to other websites. According to Nielsen, the average U.S. Internet user spends more hours on Facebook than on Google, Yahoo!, MSN/WindowsLive/Bing, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Amazon COMBINED. And the average amount of time spent on Facebook is still showing rapid growth.

Pope tells priests to start blogging

A new decree from The Vatican is encouraging Catholic priests to start their own blogs and embrace the internet.

This comes ahead of the 44th World Day of Communications.  It might come as a surprise, but even the Pope is in favour of using social media.

Twitter kills auto follow/un-follow applications

Tired of random people following you on Twitter? Fear no more. This should now be something of the past. Twitter has updated its Automation Rules & Best Practices stating that:

"The only auto-following behavior Twitter allows is auto-follow-back (following a user after they have followed you). Automated un-following is also not permitted. If you find yourself frequently needing to un-follow large numbers of users, you might consider reviewing your criteria for following them."

In line with the new rules, Twitter has also proceeded to block bulk follow/un-follow applications like Tweepular, Twitter-Karma, and Huitter's Mutuality.
