500,000 Approved Apps in the iTunes App Store ... and counting

The Apple App Store launched on July 10 2008 with an initial offering of only 500 apps.

Since then it has reached the 500,000 app mark in mid 2011, and is still growing strong.
The value of all apps currently offered on the App Store totals to $891,982.24.  At time of writing, these apps were created by 85,569 unique developers.

The average amount of apps created per unique developer is 4.6 apps.  37% of all apps were made available for free, and the standard price for a paid app is $3.64.

The top 5 app categories are games (15%), books (14%), entertainment (11%), education (8%), and lifestyle (7%).
Currently the App Store offers 147,966 (36%) of it's apps for free, with 244,720 apps available at a price.
29% of paid apps cost under $0.99 with 13% costing up to $1.99. The remainder of the paid apps cost anywhere up to $14.99 or more.

A projected 15 Billion+ apps will be sold in 2011, with a 190% revenue increase over 2010.
